The Humane Society Of The United States.
The Humane Society of the United States is involved in more than keeping animals which have been rescued for people to come and adopt. While the part of the HSUS’s work is to support the local animal shelters, the work it does encompasses more than that. Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty is the motto of the organization and represents the complex work that is carried out by the organization.
Thousnds of species exist today in the world today. Part of the work that HSUS gets involved in is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. Although most of the organizations work is carried out in the United States, HSUS has extended to other countries with some its work being to rescue some of the animals in the Ocean. The animals rescued by the organization have been involved in racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research. However, these are some of the activities because the list is long.
Another major work f the HSUS is to work with the pet owners at home and also providing support to various local animal shelters through the utilization of the various animal professionals which it has. HSUS has been a leading organization in lobbying for laws related to animals both locally and internally. The laws that the organization has been lobbying are meant to ensure that animal cruelty has been eliminated. There are instances when disasters occur, such as the Hurricane Katrina or the Tsunami which hit South East Asia. In order to rescue animals in disaster cases, the HSUS is always prepared with a team that can travel to the affected areas whether locally or internationally. HSU also has a program of educating backyard owners of how to coexist with backyard animals such as the squirrels, mice, and raccoons.
The Humane Society of the United States was not the first to be involved in the work of helping animals. The first organization to be founded was the society for the prevention of cruelty of animals and was founded in 1886. It was the first organization of its kind in the U.S. Subsequently, more organizations came up. Follwing a delegates which was carried out in 1887, the delegates agreed the organizations to come together and form the American Humane Association. In the AHA, there were disagreements among the members and this led to a split with those who left forming the current Humane society of the United States.
The main aim of HSUS is to eradicate animal cruelty worldwide. Among the first pieces of legislation was the one to fight against mistreatment of animals used for research. Due to the campaign which have been carried out by the organization, the U.S government has passed legislation that are meant to protect animals. The wide variety of legislation range from those that protect species which are endangered to those that condemn inhuman treatment of animals.
